Kellogg Posthumously Receives Carl Sandburg College Distinguished Service Award

Dave Kellogg was posthumously recognized with Carl Sandburg College’s Distinguished Service Award during the College’s 51st Commencement on Thursday evening at Galesburg High School.
A beloved instructor and colleague, Kellogg spent 18 years as a Sandburg employee, most recently as associate professor and coordinator of the criminal justice program and as associate dean of career and corporate development.
Kellogg’s widow, Tricia, accepted the honor on his behalf.
Kellogg began working at Sandburg in 2001 and was named Sandburg's Faculty Member of the Year in 2011. In addition to changing countless student lives, he changed the lives of Sandburg faculty, staff and administrators, with his dedication and served as a role model for incoming faculty.
He volunteered for pilot programs and committees; served as chief negotiator for the union; and represented Sandburg at state and national meetings and on committees. He strived to make sure the Galesburg community realized the greatness of the College, its students and its value to the area. Kellogg served with the Faculty Advisement Council for American Association of Community Colleges and was the faculty representative to the Illinois Community College Faculty Association. Sadly, after battling lung cancer for more than a year, Kellogg passed away on Jan. 7 at the age of 49.
Before becoming a full-time instructor on the Main Campus, Kellogg worked as Sandburg's director of educational programs at Henry C. Hill Correctional Center from 2001-2004. He continued his commitment to inmate education as a volunteer with the adult literacy program there until 2016. He also served as an executive board member to the Knox County Teen Court
Prior to his time at Sandburg, Kellogg worked in the McDonough County Sheriff's Department from 1993-1998 and with the Illinois Department of Corrections from 1998-2001. He also was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Reserve and the Illinois Army National Guard from 1989-1998.
Kellogg earned his GED in 1990 and went on to attend Western Illinois University, where he earned Bachelor of Science (1996) and Master of Arts (1998) degrees in law enforcement and justice administration.
